Playable race in Early Access. Starting stats and resistances stay TBA until in-game capture.
This The Lantern of the Laughless Saint races guide covers every playable race in The Lantern of the Laughless Saint (NerveLabs, Steam app 3849000, Early Access August 17, 2026): five confirmed lines at launch plus Uruhan northern bearmen added in Update 6 (August 20, 2026), each with different starting packages at character creation. There is no MMO-style race lock forever — a race-change mirror on the southern shore lets you reset later. Exact numeric stat blocks stay TBA until captured in-client; this page compares roles and build fit instead of inventing +10 Strength rows. Verified August 22, 2026 · Steam.

Steam and community guides agree: The Lantern of the Laughless Saint ships at least five playable races you choose during character creation, each with gameplay effects on starting skills, dialogue, and equipment access. Update 6 (August 20, 2026) added Uruhan, northern bearmen, as a sixth playable line in practice — marketing still rounds to “five plus Uruhan” because the base roster shipped at launch. The cards below are text-only until Stage 5 capture adds portraits; summaries come from verified EA notes and fan wiki baselines, not invented art.

Playable races are player characters you create in Magdal's Rest after the shared-dream arrival. Lizard men, fungus wizards, and vulture gorillas appear as island inhabitants and enemies in trailers — they are world flavor, not extra creator options unless a future patch adds them. When a guide says “compare all five races,” it means the launch quintet before Uruhan; include Uruhan when you play on Update 6 (August 20, 2026) or later.
Race choice nudges starting skills and gear more than it hard-locks endgame identity. Skills still grow by use on the skills page — a Skeleton who never blocks will not magically excel at shields. Pick the race whose first thirty minutes feel good: reach weapon, unarmed kit, or balanced human flex. Deep numeric tradeoffs land when dataminers or official patch notes publish them.
No official spreadsheet compares Human, Lizardfolk, Skeleton, Giant Toad, and Uruhan side by side. Fan wikis (laughlesslantern.wiki, the-lantern-of-the-laughless-saint.wiki) describe starting tradeoffs qualitatively: who begins with better unarmed tools, who fits roleplay undead routes, who mirrors the famous NPC giant toad literacy arc. Treat every number as TBA; this table is the honest comparison layer until capture fills cells.

| Race | Likely starter lean (qualitative) | Weapon synergy | Roleplay hook | Verify in-game |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Human | Balanced · flexible stat spread | Any weapon family on weapons | Default islander lost to the dream | Yes — baseline pick |
| Lizardfolk | Community favorite for brawlers | Unarmed · hand wraps · caestus · katars | Parallel to wild lizard men, not identical | Yes — unarmed synergy widely reported |
| Skeleton | Undead fantasy · defensive lean rumored | One-hand plus shield or spell off-hand TBA | Opposite of NPC skeleton who wants to swim | Yes — resistances unconfirmed |
| Giant Toad | Memorable body type · slower fantasy | Heavy or reach weapons TBA | Echoes illiterate giant toad NPC quest tone | Yes — not the NPC himself |
| Uruhan (Bearmen) | Northern bearmen · Update 6 addition | Melee frontline · heavy weapons TBA | Bearmen culture north of hub — lore sparse in EA | Yes — newest race patch |
Human is the reference race for “no weird resistances, no gear surprises.” If you are new to Morrowind-style open worlds, Human avoids learning race-specific quirks while you still master rumors, ghost fights, and Theodoris favor. Humans do not get a free pass on Tower damage checks — they just start with the most predictable kit.
Steam discussions and fan guides repeatedly highlight Lizardfolk plus unarmed lines (hand wraps, caestus, meilichai, knuckle dusters, katars). That synergy is community-verified flavor, not an official “Lizardfolk class.” If you pick Lizardfolk, actually equip and swing unarmed weapons in hour one so skill-by-use growth catches up. Switching to a Rusted Spear later still works — you will just train a different weapon skill line.
Skeleton players often choose undead roleplay over min-max. Marketing shows skeleton NPCs with wants and quests; your skeleton PC is a separate creator option. Giant Toad is the boldest silhouette — expect dialogue reactions and armor clipping questions until armor-race compatibility is catalogued. Neither is “hard mode” in published stats; both are verify in-game picks for vibe first.
Uruhan is the northern bearmen playable race added in Update 6 (August 20, 2026) (~August 20, 2026) alongside map/controller fixes, alchemy XP changes, and multiplayer state patches. Patch notes and community threads mention new race Uruhan and the race-change mirror in the same breath — NerveLabs clearly expects players to experiment with bearmen without rerolling a forty-hour save. Exact starting skills, height hitboxes, and faction reactions stay TBA on this wiki until recaptured on patch Update 6 (August 20, 2026) or later.

If you started on launch day as Lizardfolk or Human, you are not obsolete. Uruhan is an option, not a power mandate. New saves on Update 6 (August 20, 2026) can pick Uruhan immediately; existing saves should use the southern shore mirror once they find it rather than restarting unless they want a fresh Amphitheater audit. Compare melee feel in Magdal's Rest training grounds before committing.
Trailers show vulture gorillas and other beastfolk as enemies and set dressing. Uruhan is the sanctioned bearmen PC line — do not assume friendly relations with every animal-humanoid on the island. Quest outcomes still fill Amphitheater seats the same way regardless of race.
A race-change mirror on the southern shore lets you change race after character creation. Community coverage and Update 6 (August 20, 2026) patch notes treat it as a live feature — not datamined speculation. Activation is in-world (exact landmark description varies by guide; coordinates stay TBA on map until pinned). The mirror exists because The Lantern of the Laughless Saint has no respec booth for every skill — race is the one visual/stat package you may reset once you understand the island.
Update 6 (August 20, 2026) explicitly mentions multiplayer state fixes. Community guides note that non-hosts who change race in single-player may affect multiplayer character appearance or sync — treat that as a warning until NerveLabs documents a clean workflow. Hosts planning a six-player run should agree on race swaps before long quest chains. Full co-op policy: co-op.
Changing from Giant Toad to Uruhan does not refund poorly spent level points on skills. You keep skill progress trained by use; you only replace racial starting packages and whatever race-gated gear you wore. If you spread points across Sorcery, Channeling, and Psionics equally, the mirror will not save you — read the skills guide instead.
Races nudge build archetypes from the builds page — Hybrid Combat, Magic-Focused, Melee-Focused, and Exploration-Focused — but none hard-lock you. Fan guides recommend Hybrid for solo island progression: one weapon line plus one magic school after Theodoris unlocks. Use this section to match starting comfort to archetype intent, not to chase imaginary S-tier race rankings.
| Archetype | Race that often fits | Why (qualitative) | First skill spend |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hybrid Combat | Human · Lizardfolk | Flexible gear · unarmed opens fast melee | Weapon skill + Sorcery or Channeling |
| Magic-Focused | Human · Skeleton | Predictable casting habits · undead flavor | Sorcery or Psionics after Theodoris |
| Melee-Focused | Uruhan · Lizardfolk | Bearmen bulk · brawler synergy | Weapon skill + Block TBA |
| Exploration-Focused | Human · Giant Toad | Rumor chasing · alchemy sustain | Psionics + Alchemy on alchemy |
Magic splits into Sorcery (destructive / elemental), Channeling (protective / regenerative), and Psionics (mind, perception, reality-altering) on the skills page. Sorcery pairs with Hybrid and Spellblade routes. Channeling saves glass-cannon Sorcery casters. Psionics suits Exploration players who read rumors and manipulate encounters. Race does not gate schools — Theodoris gates spell crafting.
Roleplay runs — skeleton pacifist, toad scholar, bearmen diplomat — are valid in an RPG about human desire and Amphitheater consequences. The mirror exists for aesthetic regret, not optimization anxiety. If a race makes you smile for thirty hours, keep it.
The Lantern of the Laughless Saint supports online co-op up to six with shared consequences — quest outcomes and Amphitheater seats belong to the party. Race choice is per player, not one shared body. Visual diversity is default: six Uruhan bearmen is allowed; so is a mixed party of Toad, Skeleton, and Human explorers. No published rule forces race diversity bonuses — do not invent party composition buffs.
| Co-op topic | Rule of thumb | Detail page |
|---|---|---|
| Race pick | Individual at creation | This page |
| Build overlap | Two Hybrids is fine — split alchemy vs magic | builds |
| Race mirror | Coordinate before swap — MP sync TBA | co-op |
| Consequences | Shared — mercy/violence affects everyone | amphitheater |
| Host / guest | Update 6 fixed several desyncs | Discord patch traffic |
Suggest one player rush Theodoris favor while others farm island ingredients. Suggest one brew-focused alchemist after Update 6 XP buffs. Suggest one frontline with reach weapons for Tower corridors. Race names matter less than skill habits — see skills for training plans.
Scan before you reroll or speedrun the mirror. Most race regret is really skill or exploration regret.
| Mistake | Fix |
|---|---|
| Picking for lore you have not seen | Play thirty minutes; mirror exists on southern shore |
| Confusing NPC species with playable races | Giant toad NPC ≠ Giant Toad PC — both valid, different roles |
| Ignoring starting weapon type | Equip what your race begins with; train that skill line |
| Race swap before fixing skill spread | Mirror changes body, not bad point dumps |
| Uruhan FOMO reroll | Update 6 added bearmen — mirror beats deleting save |
| Solo tier list obedience | No official race tier list — ignore invented rankings |
| Co-op swap without telling host | Agree before mirror — MP rules still maturing |
| Expecting race to replace armor | 100+ items still matter on weapons |
| Skipping Human learning curve | Human is valid speedrun tech for predictability |
| Forging resistances vs ghosts | Ghost mechanic is global — enemies |
Train the skills your race starts with on skills, lock an archetype on builds, and unlock Theodoris via spell crafting before deep Tower pushes.
Five at Early Access launch — Human, Lizardfolk, Skeleton, Giant Toad — plus Uruhan northern bearmen from Update 6. Marketing says "five+"; this page lists all six playable lines.
No official best race. Human is the flexible default; Lizardfolk is popular for unarmed; Uruhan suits melee roleplay. Pick for starting kit comfort, not fake tier lists.
Yes — southern shore race-change mirror. Co-op sync may need host coordination; see the mirror section above.
There is a Giant Toad playable race and a separate giant toad NPC learning to read. Same island, different characters.
Update 6 (August 20, 2026) (~August 20, 2026) alongside map, alchemy, and multiplayer fixes.
No. Sorcery, Channeling, and Psionics are open to all races once you train and unlock Theodoris.
Wild lizard men appear as island inhabitants/enemies. Playable Lizardfolk is the creator option — related fantasy, separate roster entry.
