Is there a minimap with quest arrows?
No rigid quest arrows by design. Rumors, dialogue, and landmarks replace GPS pins. Update 6 improves map/controller readability without installing modern marker questing.
This The Lantern of the Laughless Saint map guide teaches navigation on a dream-haunted island crowned by a silent Tower — without the GPS arrows other RPGs train you to expect. The Lantern of the Laughless Saint (Steam EA August 17, 2026, NerveLabs) replaces checklist pins with rumors, burned notes, NPC directions, and landmarks you must recognize yourself. Magdal's Rest is the hub; the Amphitheater / House, southern shore race mirror, swamps and caves, and Tower shortcuts are the spine. Exact coordinates and minimap icon catalogs stay TBA — we publish habits and named places, not invented GPS grids. Update 6 (August 20, 2026) improved map readability and controller handling; verified August 22, 2026 · Steam.

You do not need a full atlas on day one. You need a working set of named places that appear in Steam copy, EA impressions, and community captures. Everything else stays TBA until in-game capture — including exact swamp names, cave labels, and interior floor maps.
| Location | Role | Why you go | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Magdal's Rest | Hub town | Trainers · vendors · quests · storage after Nuisance shack | Western wall = Theodoris |
| Tower exterior | Central landmark | First probes · entrance scouting · silhouette navigation | See tower |
| Amphitheater / House | Choice echo hub | Audience seats from NPC outcomes | Lore + endings — amphitheater |
| Southern shore | Coast band | Race-change mirror · beach rumor chains | Co-op race resync note on races |
| Swamps / caves | Wet & underground bands | Alchemy reagents · Dark Water / Bog threads · shortcuts | Exact cave names TBA |
| Island roads out of town | Connector | Skeleton fights · harvest loops · Nuisance goods recovery | Bank loot before deep caves |
Magdal's Rest is where you recover from failed routes. Merchants like Pichess (Nuisance / goods thread), magic training on the western wall, and alchemy supply sellers all live in this orbit. If a route fails twice, stop “pushing deeper” and reset from town with fresh potions from alchemy.
The Tower is both a skyline landmark and a dungeon climb. Exterior approaches teach navigation; interior floors teach combat and shortcuts. Do not conflate “I can see the Tower” with “I am ready for a deep climb.” Alternate island prep with short probes — tower.
Community and patch-facing notes place a race-change mirror on the southern shore. Treat the shoreline as a destination for race experiments and beach-adjacent quest rumors (including Theodoris tome threads), not as decorative water. Exact mirror interactables stay verify-in-save.
Swamp and cave networks feed both side quests (Dark Water / Spongestone style threads) and Tower shortcuts. Until a verified cave database lands, navigate by biome language in dialogue (“bog”, “dark water”, “underground”) and leave precise names as TBA in your notes rather than inventing fan wiki labels.
Landmark navigation fails when players look for UI icons instead of environmental signatures. Train yourself to notice five durable signatures: the Tower silhouette, shoreline curvature, settlement roofs, western wall geometry in town, and wet-ground color that marks swamp edges. These survive fog, night, and patch art tweaks better than a temporary custom pin.
When two routes look similar, use a second confirmation: an NPC name, a unique prop (mirror, amphitheater seating language, merchant stall), or a combat tell (skeleton road out of town). If you only have one vague clue, gather a second rumor before committing a potion stack.

| Habit | Do this | Avoid this |
|---|---|---|
| Silhouette check | Turn until Tower is visible, then move | Running with camera locked on feet |
| Phrase capture | Copy NPC wording exactly | Paraphrasing “somewhere south” |
| Day scout | Map a route once in daylight | First visit at night into caves |
| Hub reset | Return to Magdal's Rest after two fails | Third attempt with empty potions |
| Co-op sync | Share one screenshot of directions | Three players each inventing a different pin |
Theodoris on the western wall is one of the few “pins” the game gives you through dialogue density. Use him as a town orientation lesson: if you can find Theodoris reliably, you can find other hub NPCs without a minimap crutch. Spell crafting unlock still needs his favor chain — spell crafting.
Some caves are dead-end combat, some are quest rooms, some eventually feed Tower approaches. Label every cave by what you found, not by hope. “Maybe shortcut” notes create false confidence on the next session.
Update 6 (August 20, 2026) is the baseline for map advice on this wiki. NerveLabs called out clearer quest directions and map / controller improvements alongside alchemy and multiplayer fixes. Practically, that means dialog and journal text should be more readable, map navigation on pad should feel less clumsy, and “I cannot tell where I am” complaints from launch week deserve a re-test before you blame the design.
Update 6 did not convert the game into a modern marker RPG. If a YouTube guide filmed pre-Update-6 footage shows broken map UI, assume QoL improved — then verify on your build. If directions still feel thin, that is intentional rumor design, not a bug ticket.
| Update 6 note | Player feel | Wiki stance |
|---|---|---|
| Clearer quest directions | Journal / dialogue easier to act on | Re-read old quest notes after patch |
| Map improvements | Less hostile overview of explored space | Still no rigid quest arrows |
| Controller improvements | Pad navigation less painful | Rebind / relearn if launch week felt broken |
| Multiplayer state fixes | Host/guest less desynced on shared routes | Still agree on one shared landmark list |
Clearer directions matter most on branching quests — Nuisance, Dark Water, Ramba — where a single missed noun sends you to the wrong biome. Use quests alongside this page after Update 6.
This is the mid-page executable: a rumor → route workflow you can run every time an NPC talks. It is not a spoiler map — it is a process that keeps Early Access exploration from becoming random dying.
Finish hub economy threads (Pichess Nuisance / shack storage) before deep swamp rumors. Storage and potions make every later route cheaper. Tower exterior scouting can wait until you can retreat with loot intact — walkthrough.
In parties up to six, assign one player to own the landmark list. Shared consequences already punish split choices; split maps punish the group twice. See co-op.
Some destinations are not loot rooms — they are NPC fate rooms. If dialogue smells like mercy / violence / compromise, slow down and read amphitheater before you clear the area with AOE.

Magdal's Rest. Treat it as the hub reset. Find Theodoris on the western wall early, then expand outward.

Cave and approach exploration can feed Tower access, but not every cave is a shortcut. Scout, label, and verify — see tower.
